The production cycle of lime-based plasters in the Late Roman settlement of Scauri, on the island of Pantelleria, Italy

This paper deals with the archaeometric study of lime-based plasters found in the archaeological settlement of Scauri, located in the homonymous bay in the south-western part of Pantelleria Island. Since 1999, archaeological surveys have led to the recovery of the huge remains of a Late Roman settlement dating back to the fourth-fifth century AD. It is well known that the island of Pantelleria is entirely composed of volcanic rocks. Accordingly, the production of quicklime required calcareous rocks to be imported. The recent opening of the Plaster Cast Collection of the Department Cultures and Societies at the University of Palermo, after a long recovery and restoration work, is the starting point for some considerations about today’s possibilities of use of the academic plaster cast galleries of ancient sculpture. A multi-analytical approach was employed for the first time to study the stone materials, wall paintings and related degradation forms in the Cathedral of Gerace (Reggio Calabria, southern Italy). With an area of around 1898 square meters, the Gerace Cathedral is the largest in Calabria: its construction dates back to the Norman era (between 1085 and 1120), and currently displays distinct features of Greek and Latin architectural orders. Three pre-mixed powdered clay-based (earthen) plasters produced in Europe and specifically designed for wall undercoating were analyzed in this paper. These materials are commercially available and successfully employed in green building practices all over the world. La Gipsoteca del Dipartimento Culture e Società dell’Università di Palermo, di recente riallestita, possiede tra i suoi calchi due gessi di grande interesse. Si tratta delle repliche delle versioni miniaturizzate dei fregi del Partenone e del Tempio di Bassae che lo scultore scozzese John Henning realizzò a Londra, nei primi decenni dell’Ottocento. Le riproduzioni furono inizialmente incise su piccole tavole di ardesia, dalle quali potevano essere ricavati calchi in gesso, destinati alla vendita.
